Where have my notes gone?
Answered
I just opened Noteaway and I only have 2 notes showing - I should have hundreds. I've set up NoteAway to back up weekly but I need to retrieve notes I've made since the last back up. I notice I have 2 NoteAway libraries. One created at 5 am this morning and one at 11 am. Both libraries, unfortunately, only have the 2 notes in them. The location of my libraries is on iCloud. I have NoteAway on only one macbook. Any idea how I can retrieve notes I made since my last back up? Thanks
Thanks for getting in touch. I'm so sorry you've run into an issue.
But, your notes should be safe in the NoteAway Backups!
Retrieving your notes from the backups is not hard, but I have not yet written an interface into NoteAway to make it super simple.
Firstly, you need to go into the NoteAway Library Preferences and click the Show Backups button in the bottom right. That will open the folder of all the library backups in Finder. Make sure your viewing the folder in List view and sort by Name descending and your latest backup should be at the top of the list.
Now, right-click the backup file and choose “Show Package Contents” from the contextual menu.
You’ll see the file is actually just a folder of your notes. To restore them, you don’t need to move those note files out of the backup or anything, it’s best to leave them in place. Simply select the notes you want to restore and double-click to open them and they will be imported into your live NoteAway Library, leaving the backup copy in place.
You should be able to see the title preview of your note by expanding the name column to be wide, or you can even Quick Look the note files before reimporting them as you would any other text file.
Once you see your notes in NoteAway, you can close the backups in Finder and use NoteAway normally :-)
I'm curious about these 2 libraries though... what are they called? Where do their respective paths? Would you mind sending over some screenshots so I could see exactly what is going on here?
Did you have a custom location set that could have possibly gotten reset to a default location?

Thanks, I was able to get my notes back - at least the ones that were backed up. I was mistaken about the libraries - they were actually the notes in the library folder.

Awesome! So glad to hear you were able to get your notes back :-)
I'm so sorry that NoteAway lost your notes in the first place... was it connected to any other event, like an OS X update or did you add any new devices to iCloud or anything?

No, there wasn't any event that I can think of and I'm not syncing with another device.

I just had this same issue. I don't know what caused all of the notes to disappear. I recently updated some devices to the newest iOS version. But I have so many devices connected to this iCloud account that I don't know what might have triggered the problem.
My main issue is how to import my 226 notes, including the tags and old timestamps. It seems like you plan to make an interface for this. Is there at least a script I could run or something that would do this without having to go through all of the files one by one? Thanks!
