I just started using the program and got the error "Cannot span directly to "[My Passport Drive]". It's not readable and writable." But it is! Help!

Try creating a folder on the drive, such as "Spanned Media" and span to the folder instead of directly to the drive.
That is recommended anyway to keep things orderly on your external, but sometimes the permissions at the root of a drive are limited by OS X.
