Changing computers

I'm starting to use TuneSpan and it's really great. I have one doubt though.

If I'm to move to another computer, how should I proceed regarding my iTunes Library + Tunespan situation? Just moving the files and re-installing Tunespan on the new computer would work fine?

Taking for granted that you have done everything to properly move your iTunes library to the new computer, you will need to move the TuneSpan database as well, you cannot only reinstall the app.

TuneSpan manages a database called "SpanRestoreHistory.tscddb" and it is located in ~[your user folder]/Library/Application Support/TuneSpan

To move you TuneSpan setup to a new computer you simply need to put this file in the proper location on the new installation and reinstall (or copy over) the TuneSpan application.

Hi - I'm trying to do the same as the previous poster only now with Lion on both computers and I can't for the life of me find the Tunespan database file to move accross. I'm trying to downsize from a MBP to a MBA which means I have to span first before I copy across the iTunes library.... Could you tell me where to look?

Thanks

The file is actually still in the same place, Apple has just made it a bit harder to get at in Lion. For some reason they decided to hide the users Library folder. One of the easier ways to get to it is using the "Go" menu in the Finder. But, its still hidden in there, you need to hold down the "Option" key for the Library folder to show up in the Go menu.

So, open the "Go" menu in the menubar in Finder, hold "Option" key and "Library" will appear in the list. Select "Library" and navigate to the "Application Support" folder and then find the "TuneSpan" folder inside of that.

The file you are looking for is still called "SpanRestoreHistory.tscddb"

And you will need to follow the same steps on the new system to get the file to its new location. Of course, you may need to create the "TuneSpan" folder inside of "Application Support" on the new system.

If you are comfortable with the Terminal application, you can also use the command:

open ~/Library/Application Support/TuneSpan

Everything I mentioned before still applies, except, as of TuneSpan version 0.9.6 beta (just released), TuneSpan now uses a different library file name.

TuneSpan will now create library files specific to the iTunes Libraries you load. The files are still in the same place, but the files will now be called "TuneSpan Library [ITUNESIDLETTERSANDNUMBER].tsl"

Sorry for reviving an old topic, but maybe someone else can benefit from it. I was looking for the location of the TuneSpan library, and couldn't find it on the location mentioned above. Probably due to the whole sandboxing implementation, it appears to be located now in ~/Library/Containers/com.randomapplications/TuneSpan. Can I safely backup the whole folder (or move it to a different system if needed), or should I proceed otherwise? Please advice.

No worries on reviving this old topic...

Yes, now that TuneSpan from the Mac App Store is Sandboxed, all of the supporting TuneSpan files (database and preferences) are stored in the ~/Library/Containers folder, all in the "com.randomapplications.TuneSpan" folder.

So, when you are migrating computers or backing up, you can just use the whole "com.randomapplications.TuneSpan" folder in the Containers folder. But, this also applies to all sandboxed apps, so you may just want to backup or migrate your entire "Containers" folder.

Although, this only applies to OS X Lion (10.7) and newer. Files are still in the same place on 10.6 as it doesn't support Sandboxing.
