Spanned files in multiple places.....

Dan Beaulieu shared this problem 10 years ago
Known

New user, I spanned about 86 GB of movies and TV Shows, got a successful span but I'm now seeing ! in my iTunes and there are multiple copies of some of these files on the spanned drive but not in the spanned media folder but within a My Videos folder on the NAS? Very goofy?

Thanks for getting in touch. So sorry you've run into some kind of issue.

TuneSpan can and will only copy files into the specified Spanned Media folder. Anything outside of this folder must have been moved outside of TuneSpan.

Do you have any other apps accessing these files? Could something other app (maybe on a PC), auto copied them from the drive to the My Movies folder?

Do the files still exist in the Spanned Media folder, were they copied or moved out of it?

When you launch TuneSpan, where does TuneSpan show the files as being for these tracks that have (!) in iTunes? Does TuneSpan show (?)'s next to the track names as well?

photo
1

No other apps touching this data and not using the NAS for anything else except this spanning....On my Mac running Mavericks....no the files in question were copied to the MY VIDEOS folder instead....there wasn't any errors on the span....I have orange, blue and some ? marks in TuneSpan.....not sure what they mean....

photo
1

I can say with basically 100% confidence that TuneSpan would not have made these duplicate copies automatically. TuneSpan only makes one copy of files to the specified Span Location as doesn't touch anything else on any external drive.

Do you have any other computers accessing the NAS? What brand of NAS do you have? Does it have built in software for sharing that may have done this automatically?

The blue dots mean the track is "spanned" orange dots mean "restored" and question marks mean that the file is not found at the specified location.

Would you mind opening the Get Info window in TuneSpan for these "?" tracks and going to the "Span Info" tab to see the locations? Could you take a screenshot of tht window and attach it on here? I'm curious where TuneSpan thinks the file is supposed to be.

What's a partial Span?

photo
1

"Partially Spanned" means that iTunes does not know the proper location that you told TuneSpan to span the tracks to.

It sounds like locations may be getting reset by iTunes after the span has completed.

One thing I'm seeing from these screenshots is that the files still exist at the Original Location... did you choose for TuneSpan to not "Trash Original Files"?

Oddly, it looks like the iTunes location is pointing to a path on "BohoData" in a "Movies" folder rather than the "Home Videos" folder. Not sure how that could have happened...

What is your current iTunes Media folder as it's set in your Advanced iTunes Preferences?

Also, it looks like the "BohoData" drive is not mounted. Is this correct? Is the NAS drive currently mounted and accessible in the Finder?

photo
1

No I told it to delete the original files and it did delete most but apparently not all....there are Home Movies, Movies and TV Shows for my video files. I think the cross pollination of that was due to me trying to fix a few at a time.....

Yes it's at home, it's Seagate NAS 220....

photo

Interesting. I'm trying to wrap my head around what exactly happened here.

When the span finished, did you get an alert about TuneSpan not being able to move some files to the trash, offering to delete them immediately?

You could also check the Console app to see the system log. You can search for TuneSpan and scroll to the time of the span, I'm curious if TuneSpan logged messages about not being able trash there files.

Is the NAS currently mounted, I'm curious why it looked like it was not available in the Get Info window. Do you know if your NAS always is mounted to the same "mount point"? Do you have any special auto mounting scripts or anything?

photo

I do not remember what happened at the time of the finished span except that it did delete a bunch of file because I was wowed with the amount of space I now had on my laptop....

The NAS is at home and I'm at the office, so that's why it wasn't showing.

Interesting, it definitely looks like something was going on with TuneSpan. Looks like most likely the "Allow Access" sheet was not getting removed properly by the Sandbox helper app, then the TuneSpan UI seems to have been freezing up.

Is there any info higher in the logs? You could search for "TuneSpan" in Console (in the top right of the window) to filter the results to be more readable.

You should see some log messages from TuneSpan about starting the span and finishing the span. Getting everything inbetween those messages will help to see what happened during the full extent of the span.

If you don't have time to investigate this now, we can pick it up whenever.

Ok, so TuneSpans reason for not trashing those original files was that the file at the new path was not identical in size.

Would you mind opening the Get Info window in the Finder for one of these files at the new path, and one at the original location that wasn't trashed.

Let's see what the size difference is in these two files. Of course, if you don't have access to the NAS yet, it can wait.

Could the NAS connection have gotten interrupted during the span? I'm not exactly sure if that would have caused this, but it's worth ruling out.

photo
1

Also, thanks so much for working with me on this and sending all this detailed information.

We're getting to the bottom of what happened, but still not sure on the exact cause.

This DIFFERENT FILE catch is one of those security checks I have in TuneSpan, but should not regularly get hit. This may lead to me making this part if the code more robust to better deal with this situation.

photo
1

Random thought... Did you possibly change some metadata in iTunes for any of these video files while the span was happening?

Possibly change some of them from "Home Videos" to "Movies"?

photo
1

Checked a few files that are in both places and 1 set is different and 1 set is the same, see attachments. No I did not change anything on Sat night while the span was going, I knew it was going to take awhile as I'm on a wireless network, and this may be the cause of the issue, as wireless is voodoo.

I'm also having access issues with the NAS and I think I want to start over, scrub the NAS... or what I need to know now is how to get back in order without having to copy all the data back and respan...

..

photo
1

Interesting thing I noticed.....The movies that were spanned successfully were put within folders and the home movies did not...see attachment....

photo
1

Yea, a flakey network connection may have been the cause of this. It could be better to plug the drive into your computer over USB when doing the spanning, and then you can access the files over the network after it's done.

So, from these screenshots, the file on the right (on the NAS) is slightly smaller. But also, you've selected the file in the "My Videos" folder. I'm still not sure what's up with that, but how about the file in the "Spanned Media" folder?

If there a "The Dark Knight" folder with the file within it in that "Spanned Media/Movies" folder?

photo
1

Again, to reiterate, there is no way that TuneSpan put those copies in the My Videos folder unless you spanned directly to that My Videos folder, and without having TuneSpan create the folder organization which it normally would. It doesn't sound like you did that, so that's something to look into on your end.

Maybe your NAS has some setting in it's configuration to move video files to this "My Videos" folder so it's accessible for sharing over the web or something, if that's the case. You would probably want to turn that off.

...In fact, I bet it's something like that as it appears that the "mp4" files were copied into there and not the "m4v". The NAS may only be aware of certain video file types.

I can see that the "Faith Rewarded Extras" is in the "My Videos" folder, but also appears to be in the "Spanned Media/Movies" folder, so that means that it's not just Home Videos.

Looking at the Seagate NAS 220 Manual now...

http://www.seagate.com/files/www-cont...

Maybe this is part of the automatic sorting of downloaded files that it does.

To automatically sort downloaded files, beside Drag&Sort Service, click Enable. See “Special Features of Shares” on page 35 for information about this service.

9. You can use your BlackArmor server to share digital photos, videos and music with people on your local network. To set up this service, beside Media Service, click Enable.

10. Click the check box for Share Access to go to the page on which you set up and customize user and group access to this new share. See the BlackArmor Manager online Help for more information.

11. Click Submit.

The share is created.

If that is what is moving or copying your spanned files, you should probably turn it off. Not sure what kind of sharing your planning on doing with the NAS, but if everything stays properly in iTunes, you can always use Home Sharing through iTunes.

photo
1

:-) That looks like it might be it! Personally, I don't think you need this kind of stuff on in your NAS as your managing it yourself with TuneSpan and iTunes, and can just use iTunes for sharing.

photo
1

Here is the info about the "Media Server" stuff on the NAS.

Setting Your BlackArmor as a Media Server

Note: This step is optional. Only BlackArmor administrators can enable the media server feature.

You can use your BlackArmor server to share digital photos, videos and music with people on your local network. The media folders in which you place your files (Our Music, Our Pictures and Our Videos) are available once you enable the Drag&Sort feature using BlackArmor Manager. See the BlackArmor Manager online help for more information.

To set up your BlackArmor server as a media server:

1. In the menu bar, select Media, then click Media Service.

2. Beside Service, select Enable.

3. Set the default sorting method for media files, if required, then click Submit.

Your BlackArmor server can also function as an iTunes server so that BlackArmor users can stream music directly to a network computer with iTunes installed, or to an iPod® connected to a network computer.

4. Set a recurring time for the server to check for new music. You can set the time from every five minutes to once a day.

5. Click Submit to save the settings.

The media service is enabled.

Again, this may all be stuff that you want OFF, but it looks like you may be able to leave the Media Server stuff on, but just turn OFF the "Drag&Sort" features as I mentioned in the post above.

photo
1

I turned off the media stuff as I'm not using it for that whatsoever...

What I need now is how to I fix my spanned media that really isn't spanned now?

Why did the home videos now create a folder with the name like the regular movies did?

photo
1

Cool, so now we can focus on the "real" issues.

Lets do a bit more investigation before making any actual moves.

What is the set "Media Kind" for these tracks that were put in the "Movies" folder, that should be "Home Videos"? That setting is in iTunes Get Info window under the Options tab.

Before we do any more spans, I'll need to think a bit about strategy... Since, TuneSpan didn't trash some original files, and the file sizes were slightly different, it could be best to come up with a way to isolate those tracks and restore them and tell TuneSpan to use the files at the original location, and then respan properly and the originals will be trashed to get all the space back on your internal.

Anyway, I need to think a bit more about the best way to attack that problem.

photo
1

No They are all correctly labeled. The NAS only moved certain files to the MY Videos folder of the NAS.

photo
1

So, I'm still not certain... did the NAS move or copy the files to the My Videos folder? Do they still exist in the Spanned Media folder?

If they were just copied, you could just trash the files in the My Videos folder to deal with that part of the issue.

The other part of these issues that I'm concerned about is that TuneSpan didn't trash files from the original location since it detected the sizes didn't match, indicating that some of the video files on the NAS may not be complete copies.

So, what we should do to deal with that is to get those files from the original location onto the NAS.

Here are the files that were not properly copied, therefore not trashed from the original location based on the logs you sent above:

/Movies/Jeff Dunham Spark of Insanity - Extras/Jeff Dunham Spark of Insanity - Extras.mp4

/Movies/Jeff Dunham - Arguing with Myself - Extras/Jeff Dunham - Arguing with Myself - Extras.mp4

/Movies/The Day The Earth Stood Still/The Day The Earth Stood Still.mp4

/Movies/The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight.mp4

/Movies/Four Days in October - Extras/Four Days in October - Extras.mp4

/Movies/Faith Rewarded Extras/Faith Rewarded Extras.mp4

/Movies/Blessed! Still, We Believed Two, Extras/Blessed! Still, We Believed Two, Extras.mp4

/Home Videos/iYule Log.mp4

/Home Videos/Hampton Beach, NH - Then & Now.mp4

/Home Videos/Grand Master.mp4

/Home Videos/Endeavor in LA.mp4

/Home Videos/Deckard Cain Raps.mp4

/Home Videos/Boston Bruins Win Stanley Cup.mp4

/Home Videos/Cutting in Line.mp4

/Home Videos/Lake Hodges Dam.mp4

/Home Videos/DeerHunter.mp4

Now, here's what I think you should do to deal this issue... please read through all these instructions before proceeding and make sure you understand what you'll be doing an don't have any questions.

Before you proceed, it would be good for you have a backup of all this, and to double check that each of these files exist in the original location in your iTunes Media folder.

So, this may sound silly, but here's what I think you should do...

- Locate each of the files listed above on the NAS, and delete each one of them. (Again, make sure the originals still exist in your iTunes Media folder.)

- Now, iTunes and TuneSpan will not know where these files are, that's file.

- Select each of these tracks to span in TuneSpan (that should all be marked with a "?")

- Choose Restore Mode, and restore these tracks. Since the files don't exist at the current location, but TuneSpan will find them at the original location, then TuneSpan will just update locations for each track in iTunes. When the restore is done, TuneSpan and iTunes will know where the files are again.

- Now, you can re-span these files onto the NAS where you want them to be.

- It could be good to connect the NAS over USB or something rather than dealing with it over the network for these long file copies.

- The Restore should have gone quickly, but the span will take a while as it will have to copy all of these files.

IMPORTANT: If you aren't confident in this process and want to follow these steps just for ONE of the video files before going ahead with all of them, that could be a good thing to do just to make sure it'll all work out and no mistakes are made.

Arrrgggggg....Now I'm getting angry!

So I spanned like 5 or 6 small Home Video Files....ALL finished in TuneSpan Successfully, But when I went and looked at the spanned media folders 2 of them were not there the others were as expected.....I looked in the original spot, also not there.....found them in the trash, moved them to the spanned media folders and then double clicked play in iTunes, played fine...30 minutes later Iooked on the NAS and the 2 files that went missing were now showing in the My Videos folder on the NAS. Double checked the media service and it was still off.....I just deleted the files in the my video folder as they were in the spanned folders.....this is getting old.....what's the deal???

photo
1

Very strange. That "My Videos" stuff has to be done by the NAS, not TuneSpan.

Are you sure the "Drag&Sort Service" stuff is off along with the "Media Service" maybe there are independent, even if the media service is off.

photo

So Just so you know I got a new Iomega NAS and it works perfectly as expected even copying over wifi, Yeah!

I will never buy another Seagate product, I've had issues before with other Seagate NAS's and have had issues with their GoFlex drives too!!

Now did you say you were going to write or had a script I can use to get my cover art to re-display after I take my laptop off site and all spanned files lose the link to the artwork?

Thanks for all your hard work you have gone above and beyond the call of duty!!

That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know.

I'm glad you got it figured out and that everything is working as expected now :-)

I do plan on working on some kind of way to refresh artwork, but I haven't figured it out quite yet. I've been busy with other stuff. I did try some basic stuff, and the results weren't as good as I had hoped, so I need to dig a bit deeper to see what I can do.
