Thanks for getting in touch.

What exactly are you seeing from TuneSpan? Is it loading some library in the wrong location? If so, you can Choose Library from the File menu.

Otherwise, have you already selected the library on the external drive? Is TuneSpan telling you that it cannot read the XML file, or something else?

My iTunes library is on an external hard drive. When I go to TuneSpan, which is looking at the default library which the Mac creates on its own drive and tell it to switch libraries, go to the external drive, and select the iTunes folder on that drive, TuneSpan does NOT use that as my new library. All it does is open that folder to the music files and continue to ask for the library file. I don't even know what a "library file" is. As far as I know there is no such thing, just the iTunes folder containing the music files/folders.

The "library file" is the actual "iTunes Library.itl" file (or it may just be called "iTunes Library").

The iTunes Library file does not necessarily exist in the same place at the iTunes Media folder. If you used a default iTunes setup and changed your iTunes Media folder location to the external drive (from the iTunes Advanced Preferences), then your actual library files should still exist in the default location within your ~/Music/iTunes/ folder which is the location that TuneSpan would have loaded by default.

But, you may have created a new iTunes Library on the external drive rather than just changing the iTunes Media folder. If that is the case, you must locate and select your "iTunes Library" file for TuneSpan. It must exist somewhere, when iTunes loads your library, what it is actually loading is this "iTunes Library.itl" file.

By default, the "iTunes Library.itl" file will exist in the same folder as the "iTunes Media" folder. What else do you see in the same folder as the iTunes Media folder?
