TuneSpan shows wrong MediaType

Solved

I have several TV Shows and Movies.

TuneSpan shows nearly all TV Shows as Movies?

This results in wrong sorting while spanning.

iTunes SHOWS everything correctly!!!!!!!! Only TuneSpan not!

How can I tell TuneSpan the correct Media Type?

Thanks for getting in touch, in sorry you've run into an issue.

Is this new with iTunes 12.2, or were you seeing this before? I've found some changes in the XML which may be causing this issue.

But, it would help me a lot to be able to load up your iTunes Library XML on my end. Would you mind emailing me your XML file so I can test on my end?

It's at "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library.xml" by default. (~ is your home folder, and the file may be called "iTunes Music Library.xml")

I have just bought and installed TuneSpan, therefore I don't know how it was with previous version.

Currently I am using iTunes 12.2!

I can send you the XML, no problem. Please send me your Email Address.

There's a Contact Developer menu item in the Help menu that you can use.

I try to avoid posting my email on here to avoid getting excessive spam :-)

I'm having a similar (possibly related) problem. New movies and TV shows appear in TuneSpan as "home videos". They're correctly tagged in iTunes. TuneSpan was handling these correctly before; I only noticed the change after upgrading to iTunes 12.

iTunes 12 made some changes to the XML that were hard to compensate for, especially with Home Videos, so they were not always categorized properly because of insufficient information from the XML.

iTunes 12.2 actually made big changes to the XML iTunes Library file in a good way, but in a way that confuse the current version of TuneSpan a bit. The latest XML iTunes Library file from iTunes 12.2 actually includes more data than ever about all of the contents of an iTunes Library and includes the proper lists for the categories like Home Videos so that 3rd party apps can group everything just as it's seen in iTunes.

I've been working on these updates in TuneSpan and am making good progress. But, I also plan on incorporation some initial fixes for OS X 10.11 El Capitan into the next minor update as well. So, I can't give any timeline for release at this point.

Long time user of tunespan. Twas my savior!

and now...I too have this problem. Itunes 12 ruined my life, lol. Over 1000 movies were now changed to 'home movies', and now my glorious tunespan (yes, the paid version) doesn't see any media labeled tv shows. When I found some of those in tunespan (in my recently added tab), then spanned them, it created a new folder on my TV Shows hard drive that now says home videos. Oy vey.

For those of us with OCD, please fix soon.

I'm still working on the next update to TuneSpan that will solve this issue. TuneSpan will be better than ever at organizing all media types (including home videos) exactly like iTunes does :-)

You can still span your files and even though they'll be organized wrong in the folders by TuneSpan, they'll still be playable in iTunes.

Once the new update is out (and I'll post here when it is) then you can re-span any mis-organized stuff and TuneSpan will move them into the proper organization without having to re-copy anything.

So sorry for the current inconvenience :-/

Pico,

It's a big deal to me to know that:

1) it's a documented known problem

2) it's on the way to being fixed.

Goes a long way that you'd respond this quickly. Im looking forward to the update. Thanks again !

Looking forward to this update. Odd how for me, just a few files, have been wrongly categorised when they have, and have only ever had, the correct media type assigned in iTunes.

I hadn't spanned in a while. The need is now great. Any update as to the status of this fix?

TuneSpan 1.3 is now available on the Mac App Store http://mas.tunespan.com

So sorry it took me so long to get this update out, but it's finally here!!!

All your media will now be organized into the correct media types in the TuneSpan UI as well as the spanned media folder organization.

I even took it a step further so that TuneSpan will offer to reorganize any previously spanned media that got put into the wrong media types folders from using the previous version of TuneSpan with iTunes 12.2 :-) All you gotta do is launch TuneSpan 1.3 and it should offer to reorganize your files automatically.

I have updated to the latest version of Tunespan, and it is treating most (not all) movies as "home movies"

After releasing TuneSpan 1.3 some other users have reported issues of seeing all movies as Home Videos. I've since fixed this issue in the source and am working on a minor 1.3.1 update to be released in the coming weeks.

But, that issue was that ALL movies would show as Home Videos and it would only happen when there were actually NO Home Videos in iTunes, only Movies. A workaround for TuneSpan 1.3 is to set one movie to a Home Video and then the rest will get properly listed as Movies.

But your issue sounds different. Would you mind emailing me with some comparative screenshots of what you're seeing in iTunes and TuneSpan? If you use a "Contact Developer" link through TuneSpan itself (theres one in the Help menu), TuneSpan will create an email with helpful internal details as well.

I tried adding a (real) home movie to iTunes and then re-spanning. That worked. Thanks.

I have the similiar issues.

When Tunespan showed the pop up window saying "offer to reorganize files for spanned tracks when tags change", I pressed yes. Then, some movie files like short films went to "Home Video" folder newly made by Tunespan. And their "Media Kind" informations were changed as "home video" from "movies". But in iTunes, their Media Kind informations are still "movies", not "home video".

After reading the above comments, I added a file to iTunes and set it as "Home Video". Then, I respanned the files and they seemed OK first. But, without the file in Home Video in iTunes, their media kind information returned as 'Home Video' again.

I hope this issue will be fixed soon. Thank you.

Yes, this makes sense. There needs to be at least 1 Home Video in iTunes to workaround the bug in TuneSpan so that TuneSpan recognizes the others as Movies. If you get rid of the Home Video, the issue will return.

I'm working on the minor update that will fix this and hope to submit it to Apple later on today or tomorrow :-) It usually takes about a week to get reviewed and released by Apple after it's submitted.
