Spanned music only shows 1 file when there should be hundreds

Title says it all. All the actual files are still there, but TuneSpan shows only a single file. What's going on? If I just manually move the files back to iTunes will everything be ok?

Since you mention moving files back to iTunes... did you remove the spanned tracks from your iTunes library? Are the spanned tracks visible and playable in iTunes?
TuneSpan always shows what is in the iTunes Library and TuneSpan never removes tracks from the iTunes Library.
Since you see that your actual files are safe, I'm sure we can get thing reconnected to TuneSpan and iTunes, I'd just like to understand what may have happened here.

No, didn't change anything. All files are playable, but interesting that they seem to be existing in my main iTunes folder when I look at the file panel of the song: that is, I have duplicates of files in the spanned folder as well as my main iTunes folder. Even the single file shown in TuneSpan is also present in my iTunes folder. Weird ... as if I had already restored everything without deleting the spanned files.

Ah, so did you possibly have TuneSpan not Trash Original Files when you originally spanned these tracks? Or, do you use iCloud Music Library?
TuneSpan will always follow iTunes lead. So, if iTunes is pointing back to files in the iTunes Media folder, it makes sense that TuneSpan updated it's database as well to consider these files restored.
My thoughts are that either you did had TuneSpan not Trash Original Files and iTunes decided to point back to the iTunes Media folder files at some point when the external drive was unavailable. Or, if you use iCloud Music Library, iTunes could have re-downloaded these tracks into the iTunes Media folder at some point when you tried to play them when the drive was unavailable. Could either of those have happened?
