Won't Update File Location

Need Answer

I had an old external drive with my Tunespan files that died. Since then, I've had a tonne of 'ghost files' on my Tunespan. Some of these are still ghost entries in my iTunes library and those are okay, as I'm using them to figure out what I need to download agin for my new external drive. The problem is that some of the files I have updated in iTunes, and are sitting on my hard drive waiting to be spanned, but the location of them in Tunespan still says the old external drive location, even though the iTunes library has them listed as files on my hard drive. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get Tunespan to recognize that these files are not on the old external drive but are actually still on my hard drive and need to be spanned to my new external drive. How do I fix this?

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm so sorry to hear about your drive dying, I know that can be a major bummer.

The first thing I would do is to make sure your iTunes Library XML file is getting updated, please try the following steps to manually update your iTunes Library XML file:

• Open the iTunes Preferences and select the Advanced tab.

• Uncheck the “Share iTunes Library XML with other applications” checkbox.

• Click the “OK” button to save the change.

(Now, wait a moment for iTunes to remove the current iTunes Library XML file.)

• Reopen the Advanced iTunes Preferences.

• Recheck the “Share iTunes Library XML with other applications” checkbox.

• Click the “OK” button again to save the change.

(Now, after a moment, iTunes should create a valid iTunes Library XML for TuneSpan to load.)

After this is complete, relaunch or reload TuneSpan to see if the updated library is getting loaded.

If not, please send me an image of the contents of your iTunes folder so that I can see if anything looks strange.

I found a workaround. I had to delete the files from my iTunes library, re-add them, quit and reopen iTunes, and then refresh Tunespan and then those files stopped showing up in the wrong location on Tunespan.

Cool, that'll do it :-)
