TuneSpan hangs at very beginning of Waiting to Span & Verify

This has been happening since installing the release version of MacOS Sierra 10.12. I do not deal with betas. TuneSpan hangs, just sitting there, while starting the process of spanning whatever videos I have added to iTunes that I want to span to my external drive, a Synology DS413j running the latest Synology software. The external drive works fine with Time Machine, so I don't believe the issue is with the Synology. In fact, TuneSpan, when it hangs, reports the correct location to span to, so TuneSpan sees the drive. The blue progress bar always shows a bare minimum of itself, and then just sits there.

This is all brand new. I've been using TuneSpan for years now, with never a hiccup until now. Please advise.

Today, I discovered that Synology had installed DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 2. That update is dated Oct 5, but I've been checking every day for over a week awaiting that update, and it did not appear on my system until today. And guess what? The problem with TuneSpan is resolved! I have two user accounts on my MacBook Pro, and both user accounts ran just fine today in TuneSpan for the first time since installing MacOS 10.12 Sierra! So the problem, IMO, was always with Synology, not TuneSpan. Yay, problem solved!

This exact issue has happened to me as well, with a Synology DS216play. Although I am able to restore files just fine I cannot span them. I posted a similar topic before I saw yours. Would love an answer to this!

So sorry I wasn't able to get back about this sooner.

Regrettably, I have not had time to dig into this issue. I believe there may be some cases on Sierra where the file copy progress indicator is not working properly, so files are being copied in the background, but TuneSpan does not show the progress until the file copy is complete.

When copying from/to a NAS drive, copy times can be longer than one may expect.

To check if this may be the case, if you check the destination location while TuneSpan is hanging, do you see the intended file? Does that file appear to be growing over time if you Get Info on it?

Just checked the most recent span I attempted. I let it hang for about an hour for an 86 MB file before force quitting the application. The file "exists" at the destination location but the file size is zero bytes. I checked a couple of previously attempted files and this is true for them as well. The NAS can take a while to copy but it's never been an hour for a <100 MB file. For what it's worth, restoring the files works fine, and the progress indicator works normally in that case as well.

Thanks for this info. I'll need to do some further testing on this to figure out the issue.

Does this also happen with smaller music files? Or just larger video files?

I've just gotten a 3rd report of this same issue. This user is also attempting to copy to a Synology brand NAS drive.

I've also just tested a network copy myself (to another Mac) and that worked just fine.

I don't have a Synology NAS to test with myself, but I'm thinking that this issue may be specific to Synology and not just any network copy.

Has Synology updated to macOS Sierra? Have any of you had any issues copying files to your NAS via Finder or any other app?

Could this be related? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7675631?start=0&tstart=0

Are you connecting to your NAS via AFP instead of SMB?

I think you're onto it. I tried connecting with SMB but same issue with TuneSpan. It may be dependent upon Synology or Apple issuing an update. I ended up restoring the files and spanning to a USB-connected drive and it works fine that way, although it's inconvenient to say the least.
