Current version won't load: wants Library.iti on a PPC Mac

Solved

Therefore, no such libe exists, nor can Library be given that .iti extension. Looks like some ref to other system. Do have a Library.xml but it is not recognized.

Before iTunes version 10.4, Apple was not setting the iTunes Library extension to ".itl"

I chose to go ahead and require the ".itl" library files for simplicity and clarity. But, I do state that this requires iTunes 10.4 or later.

It could be possible for me to change this requirement to allow TuneSpan to load libraries for older versions of iTunes, but I wanted to first gauge demand.

I have tested TuneSpan 0.9.6 beta on a PPC mac with the latest version of iTunes and everything works fine.

What version of iTunes are you running? Can you just go ahead an update to the latest version of iTunes, or is there a reason that you do not want to do that?

Apple continues to support Mac OS X 10.5 and PPC Macs with all of the latest versions of iTunes.

Thanks so much for getting in touch about this issue.

Using 9.0.3 has already grown to ~77MB from ~25MB at ver. 6

Now 10.5.5 wants ~113MB and I have no interest in Airplay, iPod sync, iTexts

I much value your responsiveness today, Thanx

Alright, well that is a fairly reasonable reason to not want to update iTunes, but I have to be honest that am still hesitant to bring back support for old versions of iTunes for this reason alone and release such a minor update so quickly.

Being purely logical... what is another 50MB or even another 100MB in the size of the iTunes application when you are using TuneSpan to be able to move some many more Megabytes and Gigabytes to an external drive to save disk space.

If you (and/or more users) can really convince me, I would do it, but the less I have to worry about supporting older stuff, the more I can worry about making TuneSpan as great and as reliable as it can be. This also means that TuneSpan will be dropping support for Mac OS X 10.5 by the 1.0 release (at the latest). But, I want there to be a solid version of TuneSpan for 10.5 users, so I have been continuing to support it for now (and taking the time to test on Intel and PPC versions of Mac OS X 10.5).

I am also biased, I always stay up-to-date and value having the latest versions of my apps.

Anyway, I hear you. I want you to be able to use TuneSpan, but I also have to be honest about how I am thinking about the situation. I hope you understand. I will keep thinking about it. Please feel free to keep this conversation going and continue to express your thoughts and opinions about it.

Also, would you mind changing the title of this topic to something like "TuneSpan 0.9.6 does not support iTunes 9" for clarity to other users browsing the support pages (since it is not actually a PPC issue). Or whatever title you think fits the best, I would greatly appreciate it.

I cannot see how to change topic to TuneSpan 0.9.6 does not support iTunes 9

We could kill thread

There should be an light grey edit link on the top right of your first post (when you hover over the post area with your cursor) where I believe you should be able to edit the title. If not, its fine.

I wanted to check back in on this issue to see if you had decided to update iTunes, or just not use TuneSpan for the time being.

I got a report about another user actually having iTunes 10.5.3 but their library file did not have the ".itl" extension. I asked back for more information and confirmation and haven't heard back yet, so it may have just been a mistake or confusion. But, that possibility made me look back at the code and play with the possibility of adding support for old libraries without an extension.

So, I have in fact ended up updating the new library management code to support older libraries with no extension. I want to test it more and I have a couple other things I want to add to TuneSpan before releasing this change in a 0.9.6.1 update, but if you want to help test it and use the change before it is officially released, please just email me at pico (at) randomapplications.com

Thank you so much for getting in touch, and again, I am sorry for this hassle.

Thank-you for extra concern and effort, Pico.

I had this problem too. I ented up just coping the itunes file without .itl and adding in the copied version with .itl into the same location. Recognized by TuneSpan and worked perfectly!

Sorry I haven't responded to this thread in a while.

Life got busy and I had to focus on other stuff, but now I am back to TuneSpan.

During the busy time, I never got around to getting the minor 0.9.6.1 update out the door to bring back support for old libraries with no extensions. But I since then, as I got more time, I have continued to work on TuneSpan and have a larger update (0.9.7 beta) nearly ready to release. I hope to have it out to the public early next week. It will include support for libraries with no extension and also have some nice new features and refinements to look forward to.

I am glad that is worked for you, but I'm sorry you had to resort to tricking TuneSpan into getting it to do what you want. The new 0.9.7 version should be out early next week, which will load your regular library and you then you can get rid of this extra duplicate library. I don't personally like the idea of that extra library having to hang around forever just for TuneSpan.

If you or anyone else who sees this would like to help test the new version before release, email me at pico (at) randomapplications.com and I can send you out my latest build.

TuneSpan 0.9.7 beta has been released and can recognize iTunes Library files with either extension ".itl" or no extension.

This allows TuneSpan to support versions of iTunes all the way back to iTunes 8.1.
